Ian Penman
Ian’s speciality is media and entertainment law, with an in-depth knowledge of music, copyright, new media/e-commerce, computer games/software, television, film, brand and media rights.
Ian co-founded New Media Law LLP, a London (West End) boutique IP, entertainment and media law practice, in January 2002. Prior to that, he was a lawyer at DLA Piper in the City, from 1994 to December 2001.
Ian also acts on several company boards, as a “non-executive” director/General Counsel, including Wild Immersion [Paris based VR wild animal content company] (2018 to present) and co-founded Synchtank [software as a service company] (serving as a board director from 2010 to 2021). Ian also supports the animal charity “China Tiger Revival” [focussed on saving the Chinese Tiger] as its Chairman (2013 to present) (www.chinatigerrevival.org.uk).
Ian was also Executive Producer of the Sky Arts feature music documentary “Blitzed!”, which won the first MiCannes “Best Music Doc” award in 2023.
Prior to joining DLA Piper in 1994, Ian’s business experience included working at a family stockbroking firm, the Jean Pirie Corp., in Chicago (1981-82), and in all aspects of the music industry (1983-1990) – starting as an artist then moving into artist management, producer and studio owner, including appearing on Top Of The Pops twice - as a keyboard player - in 1985!
Ian was invited on to the advisory board of ICANN in the USA (owing to his in depth knowledge of domain names) and has spoken at the rAsia conference on the subjects of copyright and/or blockchain in Moscow in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 (www.rAsia.com). He founded and chaired (in 1999-2004) the "Digital Entertainment Distribution" conference (now run by C5), moderating and chairing the "Digital Revolution of Film & TV" panel with executives from Warner Bros, Walt Disney and Digital Television Group - at the December 2005 conference.
Ian was one of the co-founders of the new Cannes music conference, MiCannes (www.micannes.com) in 2022.
He has been a Visiting Principal lecturer on E-Commerce and Entertainment and Media Law at the University of Westminster, London, since 1995, and also lectures on law as part of the Music Business MA at Tileyard Education in London.
Ian holds a 2:1 degree (LLB (Hons) Law) from the University of London (1993), and a Masters Degree in Internet & Multimedia Rights from the University of Westminster (1994).
